Hello everyone!
I’m back with a new blog post, today I am talking all about lip balm. I am a lip balm lover, user and connoisseur. Through my teens til now, I’ve tried so many different brands and formulas, and I want to give you the lowdown of some of the best and some of the worst I’ve used. These are only some of the brands that I’ve tried, I will review the top rated first and so on! Let me know below if you’ve tried any of these brands before too 🙂
Clean and Pure ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Check out my review of their lip balms here. They are an Australian brand that I had the honour of trying out last year (PR gifted). I really liked their lip balms because they’re nourishing and made with beeswax. They are natural, cruelty free and don’t use parabens, phthalates, petrolatum or SLS. I like that they have a variety of flavours, my favourites are the Manuka Honey and Vanilla. I like the shape of their lip balms as well, it’s kind of an oval shape which you can use horizontally to easily cover the surface of your lips! They are around $5-6 each which is pretty affordable and they offer deals on shipping. Since trying out their lip balms, they’ve launched a bunch of new skincare products! Definitely check out the brand if this is something you’re interested in and don’t forget to support small businesses in these dire times!
Moogoo ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I have their Vanilla Dream lip balm and their Cow Lick lip balm (haven’t opened yet), and I’m loving the Vanilla Dream. Firstly, it tastes good and it’s really moisturising. Moogoo is another natural Australian brand on the market, their prices range from $4.50 and above, depending on the lip balm you’re purchasing. I was introduced to the brand after seeing it online and spotting it in stores. I have no complaints of this lip balm so far!
Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Not exactly a lip balm, but can be used as one! So for the mask side of this, I find it more effective when I apply it a few hours before sleeping so it has time to absorb into my lips. I wake up with softer lips for sure! As for using it as a lip balm, I like to apply a tiny bit and spread it out onto my lips, and generally I’d use it whenever my lips need a pick me up. The price varies depending on where you purchase it, you can get it from Sephora, or other online Asian and/or Korean beauty retailers. It will last you ages, and is available in different flavours too! I’m currently using the berry one!
Lanolips 101 Ointment Multi-Balm ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is amazingggggg. I have previously tried the apple one, and I have a strawberry one in storage and ugh it is so good! It’s main ingredient is lanolin if you haven’t guessed already and it’s quite thick but does an amazing job at moisturising the lips. What I love about this is that I can apply this over lip products, without ruining my lipstick. Seriously amazing! It is more expensive than what I’d typically pay for a lip balm, but it’s so good. I try to snag it when it’s on sale! Available at Sephora, Priceline, Mecca and I believe David Jones as well. The brand is sometimes on sale at Priceline and Sephora, though I’m not sure about DJ as I’m not an avid shopper there. Available is strawberry, apple and peach.
Chapstick Total Hydration⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I love the Total Hydration range, they are 100% natural and definitely one of the best lip balms that I’ve used. I purchased this in a four pack (pictured) from Costco for $20 I think, I can’t remember, but it’s worth it because the single sell price is about $8 or so. The flavour is not too overpowering, I enjoyed the Honey Blossom more than the Fresh Citrus. Prior to purchasing it at Costco, I hadn’t seen these in stores, or maybe I never paid much attention to it. Anyways, they are so good, keeps my lips moisturised and I have no complaints!
Lucas Paw Paw Ointment ⭐⭐⭐⭐
We are all familar with this one, so I’ll save you the introduction. Great all rounder, I use it mostly on my lips and on dry patches of skin. Available with a lip applicator, in a tube or in tubs. The prices vary depending on the pharmacy you’re at, though I’ve found it at Costco for about $20~ for 4 tubes, which is a bit cheaper than buying them in singles. It’s a classic lip balm, what can I say.
Vaseline ⭐⭐⭐⭐
We’ve all used this at least once in our life, it’s a household name. I used to use this just before sleeping and it worked a treat, I pretty much used it for everything. Dry hands? Vaseline. Dry lips? Vaseline. Really affordable and available in two sizes. They have Vaseline that’s specifically for lips now – Lip Therapy in tubs, and the little Vaseline lip balm tubs. I haven’t tried either, but I’ve heard good reviews about the Lip Therapy tubs!
Nivea ⭐⭐⭐
I used to use Nivea lip balms in high school, like I would use them religiously haha. I think I’ve tried almost every single one, though I haven’t used it in a few years and since then they’ve released new varieties. My all time favourite was the Olive Oil and Lemon one! They discontinued it shortly after releasing it, much to my dismay – it tasted like green tea! I really like the Hydro Care (pictured) and the Original Care (pictured). I was not a huge fan of the Sun Protect, or the tinted ones – they just didn’t moisturise as well as the others. Back in high school when I didn’t have a job, these were my go-to because they were cheap and available pretty much anywhere. I’d always stock up on them when they’re half price. Such memories!
Eco Lips ⭐⭐⭐
I bought this on iHerb a few years ago, I think I just got 3 of these (trying to reach free shipping feels haha) and yeah it was pretty decent! Haven’t tried the brand before and I love collecting lip balms. They were like $2-3AUD each, but if you buy more iHerb sometimes gives discounts like 5-15% off depending on how many you buy etc. I quite liked this, it wasn’t amazing, but it wasn’t awful – sort of in between. Would I buy it again? If I had to reach free shipping, sure! But I don’t think it’s worth the hassle of purchasing from the USA and awaiting shipping!
Maybelline Baby Lips ⭐⭐
Another nostalgic lip balm I would use when I was in highschool! These were under $2 when on sale as well, so I had to get it! I liked the colourful packaging, I believe they had about 3-4 different ones, but I always went with this one! It was an ok lip balm, I’ve definitely tried better since my teens.
Palmers ⭐⭐
I remember purchasing this many years ago, I think I’ve tried a few other Palmer’s lip balms but I can’t recall the types/names. This had a slanted applicator which was pretty good for dispensing the product because you can easily slide it onto your lips. However, it wasn’t THAT amazing for me. It was about $3? I bought it on a whim one day because I left my lip balm at home. I found that it wasn’t as moisturising compared to other lip balms I’ve tried. So, yeah I don’t see myself purchasing it again.
Lanolips Tinted Lip Balm ⭐
I loved the fruities series by Lanolips, but these tinted lip balms were a total let down for me! I purchased this because my friend raved so highly about it. I purchased the shade ‘Rhubarb’ when it was half price – these usually go for $15~ so not my ideal price point when full price. It comes with a slanted applicator, though I found that it dispenses too much product at once and I can only really use any excess on my lips because it’s coloured! This just didn’t work for me. Sometimes when I applied it, it just left my lips feeling crummy? I don’t even know how to describe it, but it made my lips not smooth which was odd. In terms of moisturisation, I would say it’s pretty good. However, looking at the other problems I’ve encountered, the moisturisation isn’t enough to save it. Considering the price, I wouldn’t purchase this again because of the extra hassle I would sometimes go through, just to get this to work for me. I’ll stick to the 101 ointment!
Carmex ⭐
Another highly raved about product that didn’t work for me! I’ve also tried the original version in the same packaging as the pictured and yeah I didn’t like it. I found this kind of melted in my pocket, or in my bag in the summer time, which is not really ideal. I didn’t have any kind of scent relating to green tea either. The moisturisation was ok, but because it was melted, it just didn’t feel the same? This is about $6~ which isn’t too bad for a lip balm, but I was pretty disappointed in this because everyone talks up Carmex.
Sun Bum ⭐
I remember purchasing this when I was out because I forgot my lipbalm at home (I’m constantly changing around my bags haha). It was $4 so pretty affordable and I redeemed a Priceline voucher I had so it was free! It was my first time trying the brand as well and I was excited – yes, I’m the type of person to get excited over a new lip balm haha. Anyways, I opened it, used it and it smelt amazing. However, I’m not sure if it’s the formula or if I got a dodgy one, but it just felt wet? Like the lip balm itself was soft, as if it was melted. Every time I used it, the lip balm would just kind of get smooshed? It didn’t hold its shape and the weather that day wasn’t that hot either. I tried to keep using it, getting used to it and just try to make it work for it, but I couldn’t. So I ended up tossing it. They also have Coco Balms, which seem intriguing, though I’m a bit scarred from that lip balm, maybe I’ll try again in a few years haha.
Blistex Fruit Smoothies⭐
I purchased this off iHerb at the same time that I bought the Carmex lip balms. I hadn’t seen these in Australia and it was really affordable considering you get 3 lip balms at once. When it arrived I didn’t expect it to be that small haha, they were like little bullets, definitely smaller than the average lip balm, but still affordable. I gave one to my boyfriend son I can’t comment on the flavour of the Melon one, but I did use the Tropical and Berry one. These reminded me of Lipsmackers, in terms of texture and the flavours. Wasn’t the most moisturising, I found the formula to be a bit soft as well? Hopefully someone understands what I mean – the lip balm doesn’t hold its shape in the tube, it can get smooshed easily. Wouldn’t purchase this again, mainly because of the hassle, but also because the formula didn’t work for me.
Blistex Happy Lips ⭐
I remember when I bought this, it was at my local Woolies and it was on sale. There is another flavour, I think it’s melon but I gave that one to my mum. I got the mango one and had high hopes because I’ve always heard good things about the Blistex range, but this was the Happy Lips series so I wasn’t sure if it would be any different. Well, it was. I didn’t like this at all. The formula wasn’t moisturising enough, I found that I had to reapply it often, which isn’t ideal. It was about $4 or so, and retails for about $5-6, depending on the stockist. Pretty disappointed in this one as well.
I’ve used so many lip balms in my life time. I currently have 4 lip balms in storage, just waiting for me to use. I have Burts Bees, Lanolips, Moogoo and Derma Therapy. If you’ve tried any of these before, let me know!
That’s it for this weeks blog post, quite a long one, with nostaligc notes. I would love to know what lip balms you’re using now, or if you’ve tried any of the above. Any favourites? Any that just didn’t work for you either? Let me know!
A new blog post will be out next week so stay tuned. Until then, have a great week!
With love,
