Self Care

Today I talk about a very important and personal topic: self care. Self care is something so important to me, and it should be to all of you too. Self care isn’t something that’s limited from one to another, it applies to everyone and everyone should practice it. Personally, I’ve struggled with a lot of things in my life, and I’m sure we’ve all had those days where we just want to give up everything. Those days where we just want to throw in the towel and not pick it up again –  we’ve all been there. But there are ways to minimise these little bursts of negativity – through self care. I can’t stress how important it is for us to take care of ourselves. As humans, we always want to look out for others, it’s natural to most of us. Whether you’re a mother, father, grandparent, significant other – we’re always trying to look out for the people we love that surround us. Which then leads to us neglecting ourselves. We should all love and appreciate ourselves in the same way that we do for others.

There are many ways that we can look out for ourselves, and it’s often in the simplest ways. Most of the time it won’t even cost you a cent!

Tips for self-care:

  1. Take a shower

I know, it sounds silly, because we do that everyday but I find taking a shower so relaxing, especially because you’re left there with your thoughts and it just seems so calming to me.

2. Take a bath

Taking a bath with some bath oil, or a bath bomb is another soothing self care activity. Like a shower, it’s calming and allows yourself to rejuvenate.

3. Dance

Don’t knock me on this one, but trust me, dancing is so much fun. You just forget about the world for a while and just have fun! I’m not one to always go out clubbing, but its a fun experience when you’re with your friends, just jamming out and forgetting about the world.

4. Sing your heart out

I love singing, even though I’m not that great, but that doesn’t stop me from trying haha. I just love listening to a favourite song of mine, and just singing along in the loudest voice that I can haha. I’m pretty sure my neighbours can hear me, but that’s why I shut the windows hahaha.

5. Shop

Go treat yourself to something nice! You’re allowed to indulge every now and then on something nice.

6. Go for a walk

Going for a walk is not only good for your health, but it also allows you to be free from technology and is a fun activity for you to gather your thoughts.

7. Draw

Create some art: draw, colour, paint, create, do something that’ll allow you to unleash your inner creativity.

8. Watch a TV show

Putting on a bit of Netflix and becoming a potato is totally fine as it allows you to just relax. I know I do this a bit too often haha.

9. Watch a movie

Open up your favourite movie and just rewatch it. Everybody loves a classic!

10. Get off social media

In this digital age, social media can become so overwhelming. I know this has happened to me a few times, where I’ve just had enough of social media and needed time off. I deleted my Facebook and Instagram for a few days to just replenish myself.

11. Go on a getaway

I know not everyone can afford to just go on a holiday randomly, but a getaway doesn’t have to be as extravagant as a holiday. It can be as simple as a picnic by the beach, or a gathering with your closest family and friends.

12. Count your blessings

Think about all the things you have in your life that you’re grateful for.

13. Eat

Buy or cook something you love and just indulge. Because who doesn’t love a good brownie or comfort food like mac and cheese.

14. Plant

Plant a seed, water it daily and just watch it grow into something beautiful.

15. Reflect

Reflect on yourself, your life and just where you are at this very moment. I’m so grateful for everyday that I get to wake up and live my life. It’s really the little things that make your life.

16. Read

Personally, I’m not much of a reader, but picking an interesting book and finishing it, is so satisfying. I had an English teacher back in high school who told the class that she aimed to read a book every single day. You read that right, every day she’d aim to finish a book. That’s 365 books in one year. Pretty impressive, right? We all think too much, which leads to overthinking, but reading a book will only take a few hours out of your day. You have 24 hours everyday, let’s take away about 8 for sleeping – now you’re left with 16 hours. In 16 hours you’ll:

  • eat
  • go to the bathroom
  • socialise with friends and family
  • go on the internet
  • go to work or school
  • etc

You’ll do all these things, but none of them will take up your entire 16 hours of the day that you have left. You can 100% have a few hours to spare to read and finish a book in one day!

17. Take it easy

What I mean by this, relates to the tip above: don’t overthink it. Don’t fret too hard about things, because everything will work out in the end. I’ve had countless times in my life, where I’ve just overthought so many things, but in the end it all works out. You just need to persevere. My friend use to always tell me ‘It’ll be ok,’ whenever I came to him with a problem. I thought that was total BS, but half the time you’re just overthinking the problem. And as always, it was alright in the end. It’s not gonna be the end of the world, just like that.

18. Call a friend

I use to hate phone calls, but it is an easy way to talk and reach out to a friend or family member. Overtime I overcame my fear and now I really don’t mind talking on the phone to someone. Hours will fly by once you start the call.

19. Hang with your pet/s

I don’t have any pets, but the comfort of your furry (or not so furry) friend will bring you joy.

20. Clean your room

Something that almost everyone dreads, but cleaning up your room really helps clear your mind. I love when my room is neat and tidy; where my bed is made, and all my clothes, makeup and desk is tidied. It’s just so refreshing for me.

I hope this has helped anyone that’s been feeling down lately or just not themself. Always invest in yourself, it’s so important. 1. Really enjoyed your post…its very true, many more poeple struggle with just stopping and being mindful, overthinking is dreadful and you amost always catastrophise a whole situation, I have learnt , with much struggle, but got there in the end, that there is nothing to worry about until you are actually faced with a problem, worrying about the what if’s in life are futile and only sap your mind of precious energy you should savour to enjoy the here and now. xx
