Does Tribe Skincare actually work?

Hello everyone!

Some of you may have noticed that I purchased the Trial Kit from Tribe Skincare back in November. This might be a lengthy blog post so make sure you have something to snack on whilst you read it.

For those who don’t know, Tribe Skincare is one of the only brands in the market that focuses solely on sensitive skin. I’ve read many success stories and news articles about Tribe and their founder, which has given me a broader perspective on the brand and has made me curious as to whether it actually works.

As I’ve mentioned many times before, I have oily/acne-prone skin. I wouldn’t say my skin is very sensitive at all, nor would I say that products make me purge often.

My biggest skin issues at the moment would probably be:

  • brightening
  • acne scars
  • pigmentation
  • redness
  • uneven skin tone

In the trial kit there are four products:

  • Clean Me! Balm Cleanser 20ml
  • Scrub Me! Exfoliant 12g
  • Protect Me! Day Moisturiser With SPF15 20ml
  • Hydrate Me! Night Moisturiser 20ml

There was also a thank you/merry christmas card inside the box AND a small packet of skittles.

Even before I purchased their products, they provided great customer service. I’ve previously messaged the Instagram page with questions about their products and its uses etc. and they were very quick to reply and very helpful.

Now let’s get into this blog post. I purchased these on a Thursday night, the day before Black Friday. I wanted to finish up my current skincare products before purchasing and I’m glad I waited because they ended up having 10% off for Black Friday + free express shipping. As I ordered on a Thursday and I’m from Sydney, the package arrived to me around midday Monday (Cyber Monday) from Geelong in Victoria.

The package was a lot smaller than I thought – it was about the size of my hand! When I opened the packaging, I was greeted by the products, the card and the skittles. Everything was wrapped securely – seeing as the only packaging the products have is the actual package box, I feared that upon post it might be damaged but there were no problems there!

The packaging is so nice, it’s floral and tropical – not to mention that the moisturiser and the cleanser came in pumps!

My review is set up in 3 paragraphs for each product:

  • First impressions (first paragraph)
  • The following weeks (second paragraph)
  • Concluding thoughts (third paragraph)

On that same night, I tried out the Clean Me! Balm Cleanser. It looked a bit thick, but melted into my skin so easily. I used two pumps just to see how it would go and it wasn’t too bad. I intended to add an extra pump the next time I used it. It has a bit of a scent to it, probably the aloe and rose hip.

As the weeks progressed, I came to the conclusion that 4 pumps were the right amount for me. This cleanser is really easy to use and I’m not even joking about how it melts into the skin – honestly it just dissolves everything on the face! If you use this as a makeup remover AND cleanser, I recommend using a little bit more. If you have the trial kit and intend to use it to clean your makeup off, then I suggest cleansing with something else PRIOR, and then going in with the Clean Me! Cleanser. As it’s the trial kit size, I wouldn’t recommend using a whole lot and for removing the bulk of your makeup because you’ll end up finishing the cleanser a lot faster than intended.

My final thoughts on this is that…it’s good! It melts makeup so easily as well as leaves the skin feeling fresh. It doesn’t strip away any of my natural oils and I love that it comes in a convenient pump. My only criticism for it is the smell – it just doesn’t work for me.

This lasted me about 4 weeks, with once use per day.

Would I purchase the full size?

Probably not. Personally I find that it’s quite expensive ($46AUD) for a cleanser and I can get a Korean one for about $10AUD that does just as good of a job. Secondly, I’d like to mention that I don’t have sensitive skin so I don’t have a problem with any of the cleansers I’ve ever used.

Would I recommend this?

If you have sensitive skin and find that many cleansers on the market irritate you or just doesn’t work for your skin, I recommend investing in this cleanser – probably the trial kit size first just to see how you go.

As I mentioned above, I don’t have sensitive skin so I can’t vouch for that but this skincare line is catered for sensitive skin.

If you’re at your wits end, then definitely give the cleanser a go. If you have non-sensitive skin then I’d advise that you give the cleanser a miss.

Here are the ingredients:

Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice, Rosa Eglanteria (Rose Hip) Oil*, Coco- Glucoside, Stearic Acid (Vegetable Derived), Glyceryl Stearate (Vegetable Derived), Glycerin*, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Extract, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Seed Oil, Citrus Glauca (Desert Lime)*, Xanthum Gum, Cetearyl Alcohol (Coconut Derived), Origanum (Oregano) Vulgare Oil, Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Extract, Olea Europeia (Olive) Leaf Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Extract, Citrus Sinensis(Orange) Essential Oil, Cedrus Atlantica (Cedarwood Atlas) Essential Oil*, Cananga Odorata (Ylang Ylang) Essential Oil*, Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Essential Oil, Citrus Aurantium Amara (Neroli)*

As the week went by, I started to incorporate the Scrub Me! ExfoliantI use other exfoliants so I didn’t start using this one until a bit later. This is an exfoliating powder that doubles as a mask. It smells very faintly like clay, is pink in colour and there are visible bits of oats. So you mix a bit of the powder with water, scrub it on your face and leave it for a few minutes then wash it off. The first time I used it, I didn’t have enough powder so it was quite thin – effective, but thin.

The second time I used it I added a bit more powder, but it was dry so I added a bit more water to make it into a paste. I mix this in my hands because I find that if I were to use something external then I’d be wasting more product than using more product. Also it’s like 12g which isn’t very much so I used this sparingly. I pour a cap full of powder into my palm and then use my other hand to add the water – I put my hand under the tap and then slowly drip the excess water off my hand into my other hand with the powder and mix. It takes some getting use to in order to get the ratios right.

My final thoughts on this is that I really enjoyed using it and I found it helped with reducing the redness I have. The ingredients are very soothing and gentle as well. I still stand by my statement about how hard it is to get the ratios right though haha. When I used this I preferred a thin layer, as opposed to a thick layer – it dries faster, I wouldn’t use the product up so quickly AND it’s just as effective. It does get pretty messy as well and what I found worked for me was:

  1. Cleansing my face PRIOR application.
  2. Mixing and putting on the mask whilst OVER the sink.
  3. Then hopping in the shower (to shower duh) whilst the mask dries (2-5 minutes).
  4. Washing it off IN the shower by lowering the water temperature, getting the water in my hands and then slowly wiping away the mask.

This way worked out perfect for me because any product that’d fall or would make my shower dirty could easily be washed away. When I did it over the sink, I found that I’d often get bits stuck in my hair or that it’d leave bits of product all over my sink. By doing it in the shower it was 10x easier to clean up because it all got washed away anyways, without me having to put in more effort to clean it up (like the sink haha).

I didn’t use this a lot during the week so it may have lasted me longer. I take back what I said because 12g is actually quite a lot and I got many uses from it. I am still going through it.

I’m also selling the full-sized one if anyone is interested. I am selling it for $45AUD and chucking in a free makeup removal mitt – total value of $65AUD altogether, therefore you save $20!

Would I purchase the full size?

I have heaps of other exfoliating products, so…I wouldn’t purchase the full size just yet. I’m selling the full sized one I have ATM because I forgot to remove it from my cart when I ordered and they don’t do returns.

Would I recommend this?

Definitely. I got visible results when using this and it’s so gentle on the skin. It didn’t feel tight or drying – thanks to the low amount of clay. The trial kit size actually lasted a few weeks as well – impressive!

The ingredients:

Cocos Nucifera (Coconut Milk) Powder, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Flour, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Powder*, Kaolin (White Clay & Pink Clay), Carica Papaya (Papaya Powder), Ananas Comosus (Pineapple Powder), L-Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Peel Extract.

The Protect Me! Day Moisturiser with SPF15 is very lightweight and has more of a scent than the others. It’s made with zinc oxide and raspberry seed oil which protects the skin from the sun. I’m not the biggest fan of the scent.

I don’t have much of an update with this, it’s just a normal moisturiser.

My final thoughts on this is that I still don’t like the smell haha. As it has zinc it leaves a tiny white cast when first applied but as you keep buffing it into your skin, the cast slowly fades away. I also wish the SPF was higher, I don’t think there’s much of a point of having SPF15 in it because the Australian sun is so harsh that I prefer to use SPF50. Looking at the texture of it, it’s kind of gritty? It doesn’t look as ‘smooth’ as the night moisturiser.

Would I purchase the full size?

This one I know for sure I wouldn’t for the same reasons as to why I wouldn’t purchase the cleanser. It’s just a moisturiser to me and that’s about it. There was nothing special to it (for me).

Would I recommend this?

If you have sensitive skin – yes, for the same reasons as the cleanser. No, if you don’t have sensitive skin because I think you can find another moisturiser that will work just as well.

The ingredients:

Backhousia Citriodora (Lemon Mrytle) Extract*, Zinc Oxide, Olea Europaea (Olive Leaf) Extract*, Caprlyic/Capric Trigclyceride (Coconut Derived), Glycerin*, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Oil*, Cetearyl Olivate, Sorbitan Olivate, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Oil*, Butyrospermum Parki (Shea Butter)*, Rubus Idaeus (Raspberry) Seed Oil, Rosmarinus (Rosemary) Officinalis Leaf Extract, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Essential Oil*, Vanilla Planifolia (Vanilla CO2 Extract)*, Citric Acid

I actually forgot to use the Hydrate Me! Night Moisturiser on the first day that I used the Clean Me! Balm Cleanser. To be honest, I don’t really believe in night moisturisers. In fact, my skincare routine remains almost the same regardless of day and night. Except in the night time, I’d use something to remove my makeup/sunscreen – so that’s an extra step. Also I sometimes use sleeping masks and exfoliants at night. In the day I’d use SPF, so I think these are pretty standard. This moisturiser has rose hip oil and aloe vera, and smells a bit like rose hip oil (the scent is more dominating than the aloe vera). Also not a total fan of the scent.

Not much of an update on this as well because I don’t see anything special about it – it’s just a moisturiser. However, I can see that both moisturisers might benefit people with sensitive skin as Tribe only uses natural and organic ingredients.

My final thoughts on this is that it does live up to their claim of being hydrating. Like I said, I don’t believe in ‘day’ and ‘night’ moisturisers. This was gentle on my skin and left my face hydrated and plump.

Would I purchase the full size?

It’s a no from me once again, just for the same reasons as above.

Would I recommend this?

Sure! I really liked this moisturiser, despite the smell haha. If you have dry skin (I don’t) I think you’ll really enjoy this moisturiser! With aloe vera and rose hip oil being the hero ingredients, you’re bound to be left with hydrated skin.

Here are the ingredients:

Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice, Rosa Eglanteria (Rose Hip) Oil*, Coco- Glucoside, Stearic Acid (Vegetable Derived), Glyceryl Stearate (Vegetable Derived), Glycerin*, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Extract, Citrus Glauca (Desert Lime)*, Xanthum Gum, Cetearyl Alcohol (Coconut Derived), Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid), Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea)*, Teriminalia Origanum Vulgare(Oregano) Oil, Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Extract, Olea Europeia (Olive) Leaf Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extrac, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Extract, Citrus Sinensis (Blood Orange) Essential Oil, Cananga Odorata (Ylang Ylang) Essential Oil*, Rosa Damascena (Rose) Essential Oil*

It’s recommended that the products be used simultaneously and for 2 weeks WITHOUT any other products, but I found that the cleanser alone didn’t rid my face of excess dirt etc. – so I had to keep using a toner.

On days I was going out, I’d use the Protect Me! Day Moisturiser, followed by another one in a higher SPF.

Overall, I found my experience with Tribe Skincare to be a good one. I recommend the exfoliator and probably the night moisturiser (it can also be used in the day) because they worked best for me and I enjoyed using them. I have oily skin and these products didn’t do anything negative for me.

Thank you for reading this long and informative (hopefully) blog post of my thoughts on Tribe Skincare. I think the brand is good, especially because of how well they help people with sensitive skin. If you’ve tried Tribe before I’d love to hear about your experience. If you haven’t, I’d like to know whether you’d like to try Tribe/your overall thoughts as well 🙂

With love,
